Rooted in Time: Africa's Past, Present & Future

2025 Theme: Rooted in Time: Africa's Past, Present & Future

A Group Exhibition

Rooted in Time: Africa’s Past, Present & Future explores the   temporal and spatial notions of Transatlantic African identity,  heritage, culture, and history. This exhibition brings together artists  of African descent working across painting, sculpture, photography,  installation, and mixed-media works to challenge linear  understandings of time and identity shaped by colonial frameworks.  These artists engage the cyclical nature of cultural   inheritance, foregrounding how time, space, memory, and embodied  knowledge shape evolving forms of oral history, storytelling  traditions, ancestral practices, spiritual systems, material culture,  and afro-futurist imaginations.  This group exhibition is a temporal intervention, documenting how  artists engage cultural memory to reframe African Diasporic identity  and experience, and exploring time as a fluid technology–one that  roots and cycles ancestral legacies & memory into contemporary  culture. Rooted in Time: Africa’s Past, Present & Future invites us  to reflect, reckon, and re-envision; to activate our collective  imagination toward liberated and self-determined futures. How do  we carry our past forward? How is culture reshaped in motion? And  what futures become possible when we root ourselves fully in the  remembrance of who we are?  Rooted in Time: Africa’s Past, Present & Future is curated and  presented for the WAZOBIA Arts and Culture Festival, organized by  Khateeta Emerson, held at City Springs Elementary/Middle School  on May 10, 2025, from 1 PM to 5 PM.
